Certainly the most popular – the recording of Irving Berlin's greatest hit by Bing Crosby has sold over 100 million copies, earning it a place of honor in the Guiness Book of World Records.
Legend has it that Berlin wrote this song in sunny La Quinta, California in 1940. When the melody shaped up in his head, he called out to his secretary: "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written - heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!"
