Commissioned by the Revelli Foundation as the inaugural commission of the Paynter Project, Whatsoever Things… by Mark D. Camphouse, is a solemn yet powerful requiem written to honor the memory of John P. Paynter, director of bands at Northwestern University from 1951-1996. This piece uses three recurring motifs, the...

first of which is stated by the euphonium solo in the beginning followed by a quiet, emotional chorale played by the entire ensemble. A few minutes after this, there is a mournful trumpet solo which is the most often used motif for the remainder of the piece, as it is echoed by a flute solo, then by the whole band. The piece is taxing to the chops in some parts (esp. for the brass,) as there are some sections where the musicians are asked to hold fairly high notes for a long period of time. To make this piece work it takes good balance, very good intonation, but above all, finesse. If this is done, it will surely bring a tear to your eye. Kudos to Mr. Camphouse!:-)
