A hauntingly beautiful song of love found and love lost from rural Wales. The tale is thought to originate from Cefn Ydfa, a farm in Llangynwyd in the eighteenth century. The daughter on the farm, Ann Thomas, fell in love with a farm hand, Wil Hopcyn. Her mother regarded a match between the two as ruinous for the family’s standing in the community and forced Ann to marry a lawyer. The song is thought to have been written by the heartbroken Wil. .
