This book manages to be fairly comprehensive, without doddling along forever on basics. My favorite quality of this offering is that the exercises are quite melodic, and therefore inspire expression, rather than simply rigid development of basic technique. This suited me well, as I have taken up the cello, after...

a 42 year hiatus. I played in high school, so I was able to get up to speed fairly quickly. Had the book dwelled throughout on basics, it would have been too boring.I would not recommend this book for a youngster with absolutely no experience: it would be discouraging, I think. I would have given this book 4 stars, but the print quality is poor, with overly thick ellipses on the heads of the half notes. This is confusing, as it is, at times easy to mistake them for quarter notes.
