Variations on an American Folksong is a set of variations on the Appalachian folk song Brightest and Best, a shape note hymn for the season of Epiphany.  The music is tonal and melodic.  It is scored for 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, 2 bsn, 2 horns, 2 trpts, timp and percuss (one player), and strings. The purchaser has permission to print the number of string parts necessary for the size of the orchestra.  The music is not difficult.  Duration is about 20 minutes.
