Friedrich Kalkbrenner wrote over 200 works for piano during his lifetime, although very little of his output has survived. This virtuosic theme and variations for piano and string quintet could be described as quintessentially Kalkbrenner, featuring many of his compositional traits including its classical style with hints of romanticism, its highly pianistic writing, and its use of virtuosity.
