The new CD "Works for Piano & Prepared Piano"Vol. IV sums up Joshua Pierce's exploration into the early and middle period of America's seminal composer, John Cage.

Featured on this new recording are solo and ensemble works in which Pierce collaborates again with veteran New York new music musicians. Highlights included:

-Pierce's two realizations of the composition "Music Walk for Heinz-Klaus Metzger" jointly performed here for the first time by Pierce, free jazz pianists Myra Melford and Borah Bergman, and Joseph Kubera, a prominent contemporary music specialist for many years;

- "Jazz Study" for solo piano, a recently descovered early work herein receiving its first recording showing yet another, quite surprising side of Cage's very extensive and diverse compositional output;

-"Five Songs" for Contralto, Cage's first composition for voice and piano dating from 1938 (words by e. e. cummings).

- "Experiences I & II", another fascinating setting of e. e. cummings' poetry for solo voice coupled with a rendition for two pianos.

The disc is rounded out by new recordings of the rather Schoenbergian "Metamorphosis", Cage's first major work for solo piano; "Bacchanale", the first piece ever composed for prepared piano, and "A Valentine out of Season", "Tossed as it is Untroubled", and "Root of an Unfocus", three little gems for prepared piano from the early 1940s.
