Nino Rota wurde vor allem durch seine Filmmusiken zu "Der Pate" (Francis Ford Coppola) und zu Filmen von Federico Fellini (La dolce vita / Das süße Leben, Otto e mezzo / achteinhalb, Il Casanova u.a.) und Luchino Visconti (Il Gattopardo / Der Leopard, Rocco e i suoi fratelli / Rocco und seine Brüder) bekannt. Daneben hat er aber immer auch Kammermusik und Vokalmusik komponiert, wobei die Chormusik einen besonderen Stellenwert hat. Hierbei sind Melodik und Harmonik unmittelbar eingängig und der geringe Schwierigkeitsgrad macht seine Chorstücke auch Laienchören erreichbar. Und gerade in Unum panem sind Chor, Kinderchor und Orgel wirkungsvoll eingesetzt.
