    Concertos needn't be serious works and this one by a contemporary British composer, although light-hearted, is certainly technically challenging for the soloist in places. It opens, unusually, with the adagio and then moves onto a fizzing allegro. The band parts are accessible to most players, with only a...

    few tricky bits here and there (the brass parts are particularly important throughout - make sure that all mutes are available). The changing time signatures keep things fresh and moving along and the opportunity for an extended cadenza (enclosed within the solo part) is a good addition to the printed one. All in all, a great piece (around 12 minutes duration) that would not feel out of place in any concert featuring your star tuba player.
