Commissioned by Boston Choral Ensemble in 2010 Tribulationes was chosen among ca. 90 candidates as the winner of the 3rd BCE Commission Competition. The composition also won the third prize in the Godfrey Ridout Awards from the Socan Foundation in Canada (2012).
Tribulationes is loosely based on the first 17 notes of Barber's famous Adagio. It virtuously combine the solmisation technique with 4 excerpts from Psalms (e.g. the first two syllables of the word Domine DO-MI are always sung with the notes C and E accordingly). And if in the text one underlines only those syllables which represent the note names, the above-mentioned Barber melody appears (TI-[LA-TI–DO]-[LA-TI-DO]-[TI-DO-RE]-[TI-DO-RE]–DO-RE-MI–DO).
The attached recording of Tribulationes is a live performance by Boston Choral Ensemble in Boston (2010).
