Liszt's "Transcendental Studies" of 1852 are without doubt among the triumphs of virtuoso piano music, and their visionary language and poetic expression make them a milestone of the romantic age. This set of twelve etudes represents the results of the composer's own revision of a collection already published in 1827 and 1839. Accordingly, the principal source for our edition was a printed copy of the earlier version with myriad changes in the composer's hand. Each of these pieces, including the famous "Harmonies du soir" and "Mazeppa," bears its own title and has entered the concert repertoire less as an etude than as a tone-poem with its own distinctive flavour.

This product is everything you'd expect from a Henle - unparalleled binding, beautiful engraving, paper and printing quality, but a soft cover which will certainly fray and be damaged over time (unless you get the hardover - Barenreiter is better in the regard). I wouldn't recommended only buying Henles or...

Peters however, as that seems a bit ridiculous, and it depends on the composer, work, and editor as to which edition is actually the most authoriatative.

    G. Henle Verlag is the best publisher of music. They are a joy to play out of and they don't age. I have G. Henle books from 20 years ago that look brand new. They are printed very well and are easy to read. The binding is excellent, it...

doesn't wear out and it sits flat on the piano. never ever buy from G. Schirmer or Dover. only buy music from G. Henle or C.F. Peters. Liszt's music is gorgeous, he is the best composer of piano music ever. This music is very difficult and advanced, but worth the challenge because your playing skills will increase dramatically. I also recommend Chopin's Etudes as well.
