Too Tired to Go to Heaven

By Mark Hayes

SATB choir, solo voice (a cappella)
Composed by Mark Hayes. Choral. Concert. Octavo. Heritage Music Press #15/2347H. Published by Heritage Music Press (LO.15-2347H).

Item Number: LO.15-2347H

This joyful new gospel song is set in the style of a call-and-response spiritual. After a slow, passionate opening, the tempo accelerates and rhythmic exchange between soloist and choir takes center stage. The lyrics speak of how the singer is weary of this life and longs for something better...heaven. Promises of no pain, no tears and great joy await the singer there, but for now he sings, Lord, I'm too tired to go to heaven right now! Equally appropriate for school or church use.

I am a student in a Middle School CPA program (Creative Performing Arts) and I would highly recommend this piece for Middle School choirs. It is moderately challenging, but is fun and is worth the work. A suggestion for the solo: At my school, we broke it up into four...

segments, and assigned then to different students according to their strongest areas. It allowed more students to shine, while emphasizing the areas they were best at and reducing the amount they had to memorize.
