By Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Score,Set of Parts. 65 pages. Published by RBMusic (H0.428099-SC001469478).

With lyrics byStephen Sondheim and music by the great Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story is a musical inspired by William Shakespeare's playRomeo and Juliet. It is set in theUpper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s and explores therivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, teenage street gangs of differentethnic backgrounds.

It opened onBroadway in 1957 and was nominated for 6 Tony Awards (winning 2). It ran for732 performances before going on tour. A film adaptation was released in 1961,winning 10 Academy Awards (including Best Picture) makingit the musical film with the most Academy wins.

The "TonightQuintet" is based on the duet between Maria and Tony earlier in themusical, "Tonight". The five parts of the quintet are sung by theJets, the Sharks, Tony, Maria, and Anita. It starts with the Jets and theSharks singing overlapping parts, anticipating the “rumble” to come. Anita thensings about anticipating the return of her boyfriend, Bernardo, who usuallygets riled up after a fight. Tony sings of his longing to see Maria beforeeveryone sings together, with Tony and Maria sing of their eagerness to seeeach other.

This song shows themastery that Bernstein had as a composer that, some critics said, “rivals thebest of such moments in European opera”. This song, with its dramatic andcontrasting elements, has been compared to the trio "Cosa sento!"from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaroand the quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto.

This arrangement isfor the UK-style brass band and is taken from the original Broadway production, meaning the interplay between the Jets and the Sharks, as well as when Mariafirst sings, is different to the film version. A recording of the song performedby the original Broadway cast can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-oyVRuPRlY.
