Two performers each play four tom-toms in a four-movement piece with a total duration of ten minutes. All tempi are expressed in multiples of two. Times Two is so named because each dimension of the piece is constructed in multiples of two. Two performers each play four tom-toms in a four-movement piece with a total duration of ten minutes. All tempi are expressed in multiples of two. In each movement a principal rhythmic and timbral idea is contrasted and transformed using a variety of performance techniques and activators including sticks, yarn mallets, brushes, and hands. Movement One begins with loud polyrhythmic double stops played using hard yarn mallets and evolves into sparse counterpoint played using fingers, brushes, and sticks. In Movement Two a sonic spectrum encompassing various types of rolls is juxtaposed against single strokes, sticking effects, vocal sounds, and glissandi produced by changes of head tension. In Movement Three notes performed on the rim serve as a backdrop for the development of rhythmic fragments performed on the drum heads. Shifting accents and the alteration of ostinato patterns with continually shifting rhythms form the basis of the fourth and final movement.
