Thunderstorm was written for a medium-sized school band, at an intermediate level. It can be used in many different settings, such as school curriculum, concerts, background, and student films.

The piece starts out with the violins sustaining a single note, while the cellos and bass clarinet sparsely play some low, rounded notes. The first melody drifts towards our ears, the flute carrying it as the violins create a shimmering texture, like that of rain falling on a metal roof. A crescendo starts in unison with a timpani roll and brings us into a new segment of the piece. The violas and woodwinds get the melody, while the cellos play a throbbing beat. The rhythm becomes increasingly syncopated, and the melodies turn sharper and heavily accented. As the intensity gradually increases, instruments drop out and then build back up, eventually coming to a thunderous conclusion. With one final bang, the piece ends, and a few instruments fade back into silence.
