  • November 18, 2006 Very well done and lots of fun!

There are four pieces in the suite, all well done and could stand on their own. The first is a very literal transcription of the overture, practically note for note, in the original key. The second is a very imaginative mixing of two songs, The Moritat of Mack the Knife...

and the Ballad on the Insufficiency of Human Endeavor. The last two are charming arrangements of the Instead-Of Song and Canon Song. I am a giant fan of the original Weil music, and especially love this suite because it keeps so much of the spirit of the original, including lots of jerky/jazzy rhythms and the strong yet playful harmonic dissonance. Be warned, much of it sounds more like Schoenberg or Hindemith than Bobby Darrin or Oscar Hammerstein.
