I am a hornist with 40 years experience and play professionally in regional symphony and church and university orchestras. Franz Strauss' Theme and Variations is an enjoyable, light, fairly short show piece scored for horn and piano. It is styled a lot like Franz Strauss' Fantasie for horn and piano...

and also reminiscent of his horn concerto, with a slow legato start followed by variations using fast runs occasionally reaching concert high E flat. It's great fun to play and probably well suited for intermediate - advanced intermediate and advanced players. It is not too long and allows the hornist in some variations to negotiate runs and phrases also found in the longer more demanding concerto. It would make a very nice introductory or short in between piece for a horn recital. The horn and piano parts are very legible and easy to read.
