The Winter Rose incorporates both traditional carols and newly composed anthems that visit the timeless Christmas story with fresh insight. Through use of music, narration and simple symbolism, the cantata presents the life of Christ from prophecy to passion. The orchestrations effectively capture the essence of Joseph Martin's well-crafted piano writing, fully expressing the color and beauty of this musical tableau. Highly recommended!

Joseph Martin's Christmas musical is true to scripture, lovely musical settings, and easy to like folk tune and hymn settings. You can pull out several pieces for stand alone performance. It is made significantly better by Brent Adams orchestration, which is colorful emotive, (and expensive to assemble). It is...

possible to sing the work well using the trac orchestra--but doing so will suck some life out of it. The narrations try a little too hard for "artistry" and poetic expression, but they tell the greatest story ever told, and do it faithfully. Choir members can learn their parts by listening to the CD, (but they shouldn't).
