  • November 12, 2008 Great for "Mama Mia" fans!

I've been playing the piano for about 50 years. I do it just for my personal enjoyment. I bought this particular songbook because of my interest in the movie "Mama Mia". This was just what I needed! It's certainly served my purpose.

Unfortunately, this editions is not for the long-time Abba fan who wants to have some insight into how their great songs were put together. (After all, the interplay of distinct and memorable parts is one of the things that makes their music special.) Instead, you'll get a simplified...

    - I have to say dumbed-down - edition. True, a greater number of less-skilled players will be able to play these versions than the originals. But, I find that the simplifications have been poorly done by the editors, resulting in uneven difficulty levels and stretches of characterless music that have none of the magic of ABBA in them. I'm happy for lots of people to have access to ABBA's music. But since it's only a shadow of the real thing, how many will want to? This collection will not bring many people to love ABBA's music if they haven't heard the original recordings.

  • October 10, 2008 Six flats...really?

The quality of the book is great. But you'd think they would transpose these pop songs into keys that less-experienced players can handle. I mean, The Winner Takes It All in six flats? Take A Chance On Me in five sharps? Maybe those were the keys the originals...

were scored in. But if they're going to be that faithful to the originals, they should have included the counterpoint lines with lyrics and notes also. I'd like to see this reissued so no song had more than two accidentals so more people could just sit down and play.

This songbook contains the most complete list of ABBA songs and in a format that is not too hard and not too easy. Perfectly balanced. If you like their songs and want to sound good playing them, this is the book for you.
