TheRiver at the End of Day

By ColinKirkpatrick

Thisis a collection of fifteen delightful elementary piano pieces on the pastoral themeof the river. Youngsters are sure to enjoy these tuneful pieces, crafted especiallyfor the young learner. They are ideal for young beginners, but of course couldbe used with beginners of all ages. More experienced students will find themideal and enjoyable s sight-reading exercises or to develop the useful skill oftransposing at sight.

The colorfulpieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty, so you can feel free topick and mix according to the needs of the students. The first few pieces useonly quarter notes (crotchets), half notes (minims) and whole notes(semibreves). Afterwards, note values are introduced gradually. Each piecetakes up just one page and every piece includes some information about themusic. Sometimes the information raises questions such as how short a staccatonote should be. In several of the pieces, the student is encouraged to makemusical decisions.

Manyfingering suggestions are included and while articulations are omitted from thefirst few pieces they’re later introduced gradually. Phrasing is omitted fromthe first nine pieces on the grounds that most beginner students have enough tocope with. You might like to introduce the concept of phrasing in the earlierpieces if your student can handle the music without difficulty. The audiosample contains recordings of the following pieces: (1) Quiet Waters,(2) Drifting, (3) At the Riverbank, (7) Song of the Water Gypsy,(14) Children’s River Song and (15) Round Dance.
