Your Path to Playing with the Stars of Tomorrow. Composed by John "Hound" Brown. Duration 57:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.18080).

The Nashville Drummer is a collection of eight original tunes featuring one of today's premiere drummers and singer-songwriters, John 'Hound' Brown. Hound has purposely chosen these original tunes to reflect the most often used primary grooves and styles for today's working drummer. Each song features traditional drum set notation (often used by jazz drummers) and the Nashville Number System (used by professional session players in studios all over the world).

MISSION STATEMENT Laying it down. The Groove. This is the Art of Drumming. The simple truth is that while it takes a lifetime to master anything, what we as professional drummers do is actually much simpler than what you may suspect. We often say 'Less is More.' Whether on the road, in the studio or creating music, all modern music requires us to play fundamentally the same things over and over. There are a handful of grooves we use the vast majority of the time in today's popular music, regardless of genre. The magic lies in how we deliver those grooves and infuse them with our individual unique style. The smallest things affect those grooves: hi-hat movement, ghost notes on the snare, space, laying back on the snare or playing on the edge of the beat, and so on. This is my toolbox. I bring this basic knowledge to every situation yet remain open to altering it. In today's musical landscape you MUST be a Chameleon. Be able to play all styles to some level of proficiency and mix them up so you can quickly adapt to any given situation. People listen to a variety of music that is interconnected in one way or another. Hip-Hop and loop-generated music has permeated every aspect of all genres. Country has affected rock, pop has changed country and swing is used in every genre. For the majority of your playing career, most of what you will play is going to be in 4/4 time and some form of a straight-ahead, basic rock-pop-country groove. All commercial music and radio dictates this . They are the most popular tunes. It all starts with you. The drummer. You are the foundation. You-re the pitcher & the catcher, the quarterback and the center. When you sit on that drum throne, pick up those sticks and count it off, you-re the captain of the ship. Learn to LISTEN. Trust your instincts. Play with your heart, first. Own the song. For those that love a groove, this book was written for you.
