It was originally written for the 2002 film We Were Soldiers, and was performed by the United States Military Academy Glee Club. The hymn also served as the recessional in the 2004 funeral of President Ronald Reagan. That rendition was sung by the Armed Forces Chorus with the United States Marine Chamber Orchestra. Since then, the song has become a cherished part of many Veterans and Memorial Day observances, funerals, July 4th celebrations and all other events which honor our service members.
Even without the words, this simple hymn evokes a powerful message.
