"I wrote The Lamb in 1982 while being driven by my mother from South Devon to London. It came to me fully grown so to speak, so all I had to do was to write it down. It was inspired by Blake and by my three-year-old nephew, Simon." – John Tavener

The Lamb is a choral setting of the William Blake poem The Lamb from Blake's collection of poems Songs of Innocence. It was first sung, shortly after its composition, at a service in Winchester Cathedral on 22 December 1982, which was broadcast 2 days later to a large international TV and radio audience as part of the Christmas Eve carol service (The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols) from King’s College, Cambridge. This ‘Christmas’ link is most likely due to the reference to the birth of Christ and gave the piece widespread exposure. Sometimes it is sung as an anthem at the end of the Anglican service of Evensong.

The Lamb featured in the soundtrack for the film The Great Beauty and was a set work for the Edexcel A level music examination.

This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band. Although the original setting does not use any time signatures, they have been added into this arrangement. A recording can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyBp9hrzDQE.
