    Like most contemporary composers, Richard Danielpour hasn't provided an extensive body of works for solo piano -- but he did make a mark with five pieces for piano in the early '90's, which he entitled "Enchanted Garden". These were IMO quite successful character pieces employing a sophisticated and individuated...

    extended tonal language. He has now provided us with a second set of pieces. In general, Danielpour's language was fully formed in the first set, and he does not give me anything strikingly new, but there are several very fine pieces. The "Elegy" is IMO the best -- simple, straightforward, plaintive, very moving! "Persepolis" is a very effective opening prelude. Of the more virtuosic efforts, the "Lean Kat Stride" is very reminiscent of his "Mardi Gras" in his first set, and somewhat less difficult (though not easy!). Lots of musical rewards here, although I think that "Night", from the first set, is still his best effort. Definitely recommended!
