Oneof the most haunting love songs from Ireland. In Andrew J. Boyle’sinterpretation the shifting temperament of the song has been given specialattention – the conflict between optimism and foreboding. The text of the song, which tells of a heartsick young girl longing to be reunited with her lover, isknown in Irish collections from the mid-18th century. In early versions theobject of the girl’s affections was an Irish highwayman who was hanged in 1750for pursuing his ‘trade’ on the Curragh. It has had various titles, including TheLamenting Maid and The Winter itis Past.
