Eric Harding Thiman, the organist and composer, had musical training with private teachers; he gained his FRCO in 1921 and became MusD (London) in 1927. From 1930 he was professor of harmony at the RAM, and from 1956 to 1962 was dean of the faculty of music at London University. He was conductor of the Elysian Concert Society and Purley Choral Society, and had been organist and choirmaster at the City Temple since 1957. A keen advocate of congregational singing, he contributed an article on his methods to W. T. Whiteley's Congregational Hymn-singing in England, and was chairman of the music committee of Congregational Praise. His compositions include cantatas, anthems and services.

I love this book! There is not a piece in it that isn't worth singing, and several always are among the favorites at any congregation where I've worked as a staff musician once I've presented them. (None of these congregations had a "worship center"--the picture on...

the cover tells something about the style of church music and worship for which the works are intended.) Thiman's works have accompaniments that serve the text like those of fine art songs (often with some interesting harmonic choices), but the melodies also please parishioners who just want a hummable tune sung by a lovely voice. My only gripe is that the book comes only in a medium key. Pieces lie in a range that most voices can certainly manage; however, not all will be exactly flattered. (They suit this tenor OK at 8:00 AM but wouldn't be so much fun 12 hours later.)
