Composed by North Carolina traditonal folk tune. Arranged by J. William Greene. Folk. Individual Part. 4 pages. Published by J. William Greene (S0.54307).

Item Number: S0.54307

This creative arrangement of a post-Civil War North Carolina folk tune exploits the "bending" of a melody around the beat, a common practice in folk music. While the beat is steady--though sometimes "stretched"--the tune occasionally "slips" behind or more rarely before the beat. When this happens the upper voices sometimes drop an initial hard consonant to avoid a stuttering effect. Singers of this ballad are encouraged to intensify this effect to greater or lesser degree according to their taste. Fermatas (as a momentary suspension of the beat) can be longer or shorter for the same reason. Dynamics should be derived from the text.
