Just another book trying to explain a ridiculous and highly inefficient conducting technique. As you can imagine I don't believe in his conducting technique, but for those who think it is good, this book is a valid resource. The book explains in the first pages his conducting philosophy (full...

of contradictions), and the basic and traditional conducting patterns. Farberman doesn't believe in patterns, because he thinks they carry no musical meaning and professional orchestras don't need them (I've been playing with a major US orchestra for over 30 years, and we do NEED them, as well as other info from the conductor, but the pattern is necessary). Over 100 pages are used to explain his method to notate conducting gestures, his highly personal "pitch registration" (showing melodic shapes by playing a virtual piano keyboard upside down in front of the conductor), and the importance of the wrist in his technique. There is a DVD to accompany this book (sold separately), but it does not help.
