Part of Gossec's legacy is that he is regarded as the 'musical spokesman' for the French Revolution. Tambourin’s martial character evokes the sound of 'Pipes and Drums' which traditionally led troops into battle, and 'Tambourin', of course, means 'little drum' in French.
