A piece that cuts across numerous American styles and employs uniquely American themes, it still clearly reflects elements of Copland's French training.     score" type music and his own "Fanfare for the Common Man," Copland achieves for America what Beethoven achieved for Germany more than 100 years before - the quintessential expression of a nation's musical spirit at that point in time. Buy the NY Philharmonic/Bernstein recording. Although Copland recorded it too, he was a much better composer than a conductor. I think it took Bernstein to show us what Copland was trying to say.
