Louise Farrenc (nee Jeanne-Louis Dumont) was born in Paris, on May 31, 1804. She began studying the piano with a former student of Muzio Clementi, but when the scope of her talent became clear, she also had lessons from such masters as Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. And because she also showed great promise as a composer, she was allowed to study composition with Anton Reicha, who was composition teacher at the Conservatoire at the time. She married Aristide Farrenc, then a flute student, and married him in 1821. She suspended her studies to concertize with him throughout France; until he grew tired of that life, and opened a publishing house in Paris. Edition Farrenc was one of France's leading music publishing houses for nearly four decades. Mme Farrenc resumed her studies with Reicha, and upon their completion, she embarked on a solo concert career, which earned her such fame that by 1842, she was appointed to the permanent position of Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire, which position she held for thirty years, and which was one of the most prestigious in all of Europe. Farrenc, despite fame and prestige, earned a lower salary than her male counterparts for nearly a decade. It was only after the triumphant premiere of her Nonet (in which the great violinist Joseph Joachim took part) that she demanded and finally received equal pay. Louise Farrenc died in Paris, on September 15, 1875; her grave is in Montparnasse Cemetery, Paris.
