This monumental work, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece, is a challenging and uniquely rewarding composition for the advanced concert band. Johan de Meij's work was awarded the Sudler Prize for composition in 1990 and continues to receive important performances yearly. After 35 years of its first performance, composer Johan de Meij has given the work a thorough revision of his first symphony. He made significant changes in the instrumentation, articulations & dynamics, added parts for cello, harp, 2nd oboe & contrabass clarinet, and created new layout and look of score & parts and score cover. Each of the five movements is also available separately. (Grade 5).

  • April 20, 2010 Amazing Composition!!!

It's an amazing piece of music, the very essence of the Lord of the Rings.Very well composed. May I suggest that parts for Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba or Basses be transported to bass clef and the price be somewhat lowered for non-profit making concert bands. It would...

be a pity for our concert band, which is a non-profit one,to miss this marvelous composition because of the price.

This piece is definitely not for the faint of heart, but if a group can pull it of, it will blow an audience (or compeditors) away. My only complaint is that it is not available in full symphonic orchestra instrumentation.

I have heard this piece played, and I think it deserves better praise. The price is a bit high, or I would buy it.

  • September 19, 2001 Wow...amazing piece!

I have played this piece with my high school band and taken it to a competition (which we won first place!). The composition of this piece is simply outstanding. When performed, this piece brings outstanding reviews. It's good for the more advanced band, but the reaction is truly worth...

all of the work that is put into preparing it.
