On November 7th, 1891, Bruckner was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Vienna. He clearly set great store by this honor paid to his work "as a symphonist"; in gratitude he dedicated this symphony, which he had finished revising some months before, though quite indendently of the doctorate, to the University Senate.
