Malcolm Williamson was one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, but he has been sorely neglected. This is a paradox. A remarkably versatile, eclectic and strikingly individual composer, Williamson wrote many astonishing scores. Among them is the 'Symphony for Voices', written in the early 1960s. The piece is...

cast in 5 sections, the first being a lengthly and taxing invocation for solo alto. The remaining four sections are truly amazing in their rhythmic, structural and harmonic diversity. "Terra Australis" and "New Guinea" are both beautifully evocative, the latter (which ends the piece) concluding with an exquisite chorale-like idea. The third section, "Jesus" is a strange but effective unsion recitative, and the fourth section, "Envoi" is two minutes of virtuoso choral fireworks. A new recording of the work is now available from Peter Broadbent and the Joyful Company of Singers. Brilliant and affecting music, well worth a look.
