  • February 27, 2014 A sublime American symphony

It has been some while now since I first read through the score of Gunther Schuller's sublime Symphony 1965, and even a longer time since I first heard the work on the Turnabout vinyl recording (still in my collection) -- TV-S 34412. But the work remains unforgettable since first...

hearing -- from the sonorous clanging opening chord to the final shimmering notes of the ending. The entire work resonates with beauty and profundity. It truly is a great American orchestral work, sadly one yet still too obscure. Listen to Schuller's symphony and marvel that this is music written by an American at the height of the Beatles' early fame. We have our genius, too. Whenever I contemplate great American symphonies and/or great orchestral music that should be better known, one of the first works to come to mind is Schuller's Symphony 1965. If our country has produced a finer work during that powerful epochal decade known as the 6o's, I have yet to hear it. And I've heard quite a bit.
