The Andalusian composer Antonio Alvarez studied at the Madrid Conservatory of Music where he graduated with First Prizes for piano, organ, harmony and composition. He conducted mainly zarzuelas (Spanish operettas) but was also piano accompanist of the famous violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. He composed zarzuelas, pasodobles and marches. The splendid concert pasodoble Suspiros de EspaOa (Spanish Sighs/Desires) became world famous as lyrical expression of the Spanish musical nostalgia. You can hardly imagine music that sounds more Spanish-like and matches its title so well.
