Composed by Larry Clark. FS - SWS. Young String Orchestra. Sunayama is a Japanese folk song and one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I used it as the basis for this composition. It is typical of Japanese folk music, but has a contemplative character that I was trying to portray with this piece. Score and part(s). With Standard notation. Carl Fischer Music #YAS72. A hauntingly beautiful japanese folk song is the basis for this mysterious, lush setting by popular composer Larry Clark. Sunayama gives you the opportunity to feature your four best players with string quartet writing that really adds color to this inspiring piece. The musicality of Sunayama will inspire your students to achieve a higher level of musical excellence.
Sunayama is a Japanese folk song and one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I used it as the basis for this composition. It is typical of Japanese folk music, but has a contemplative character that I was trying to portray with this piece. It is also unique in that the piece can seem at times to be in both major and minor, and I have done that also in my setting. The introduction of the piece sets the mood, and it is all about the viola in this part of the piece in E minor. Let that voice carry through the rest of the ensemble. This leads to the first setting of the folk song with a solo string quartet also in E minor. This should be a fresh color change after the full-ensemble introduction. This section should be simple and plainly beautiful. It is a great opportunity to feature your four best players in the orchestra. The full ensemble returns with an Alberti-bass type figure in the celli underneath the folk-song melody. The tempo should move a bit here, so that there continues to be forward momentum in the piece. This is followed by an altered version of the introductory material that moves away from E minor and seemingly modulates to G major. The final and climactic statement of the song is now present in G major instead of E minor, giving the piece a needed lift into the ultimate climax at m. 55. The solo string quartet returns with one more phrase of the melody followed by a solid return to E minor to complete the piece in the same contemplative way that it began.
