Published by Luxuan Elly Wen (A0.899168).Summer Afternoon Elly holds an undergraduate degree in Piano Performance from Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China and a Master’s degree in Piano Performance from West Chester University. She is currently a graduate student in the Piano Pedagogy program at WCU. In the fall of 2014, Elly composed Summer Afternoon as a piano duet for a final project in one of her pedagogy classes. The main theme was drawn from a former piece she had written in a composition class. Elly described the original thematic material as "soothing," and then explained that she adapted it into the duet she composed as follows: "It was in early winter, when the weather turned gloomy and the temperature decreased by days after late autumn. Many people start to have seasonal depression during that time of the year. I wanted to write music that could make people feel delightful and positive, which then reminded me of the theme I had first composed in late spring 2013 which infused the spring atmosphere. Upon thinking of giving it an even warmer musical sense, I chose a tropical rhythm and added the Bossa Nova beat. Thus, the music was pushed forward to the summer.
