As a longtime instructor of recreational teen and adult piano students, many of whom initially came to me with technical deficiencies requiring remedial work, I soon found a need for concise, cleanly laid out scale and arpeggio fingering charts grouped by common fingerings. As is common practice in the University of Michigan preparatory piano program from which I graduated, I use the designations "Group 1," Group 2," and "Group 3" for all scale and arpeggio fingerings. This makes the learning process much more streamlined for students who may be coming to you with little to no background in scales and arpeggios.

In addition to presenting these items in convenient fingering-based groups, I have also typeset them in a clean, fuss-free layout, with only one-octave scales (with a note that most fingerings are reversible) and two-octave root-position arpeggios included. Other currently available scale and arpeggio books include other scale variations (in 3rds, in 6ths) and arpeggio types (in inversion) that are simply not yet necessary, and are often distracting, to students just learning or relearning technique. These charts' clean and friendly layout doesn't distract or overwhelm students, but invites them to practice! Unusual fingerings within each group are also marked with a cute "eyeglasses" icon to draw the student's attention towards them. The major scales are presented in the order in which i usually teach them: B major, which fits best under the hands, appears first, before the Group 1 scales.

Each scale and arpeggio also appears with the appropriate sharps and flats on each note, so students who have not yet memorized all their key signatures (but know what sharps and flats do) can still verify the pitch content for each scale and arpeggio.

Those who teach technique in the style of Gyorgy Sandor (or those who are generally concerned with good alignment) will also appreciate my gentle reminders to "flip" the thumb (rather than tucking it under the hand, rendering the thumb muscle useless and causing tension/lockdown). Of course, these charts are not meant to substitute for rigorous instruction in proper technique, but I hope that they make scale and arpeggio instruction much easier for you! They have been extremely popular in the most active online piano pedagogy communities and I hope your students love them too!
