For Contralto solo, SATB Chorus and Orchestra

A major new choral/orchestral work from the composer of Adiemus and The Armed Man. The 13th-century Latin sequence, set by many famous composers of the past, receives a fresh expression and intensity in Karl Jenkins's setting. The work is divided into twelve movements and incorporates additional texts including “Ave verum corpus” (originally composed for Bryn Terfel), “Lament” by Carol Barratt, and English texts derived from ancient Babylonian and medieval Persian sources. By turns dramatic and reflective, Stabat Mater will be eagerly seized on by Jenkins fans everywhere. Suitable for choirs of intermediate standard upwards.

I already knew Jenkins' works, particularly The Armed Man, Adiemus, Palladio. I like his simplicity and his harmonies, and think that firstly Ave Verum and then the whole Stabat Mater will became part of the program of my choirs for church and concert use.

  • January 29, 2009 Great blend of contemporary and classical

Powerful and melodic, Karl Jenkins' commercial roots show in his Stabat Mater, but in a good way. Karl also adds a few of his own works to the classic. With good coaching this piece is within reach of a broad spectrum of choral groups with gratifying results. A performance prerequisite...

would seem to be adequate orchestral accompaniment, especially percussion. Don't miss the recording with Karl conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. Every track is great, but the "Lament" with Belinda Sykes will tear your heart out.
