The second song from the SPACE RACE song cycle, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, July 1969. Other songs are: Gagarin (Beyond Blue Sky), The Children of the World (July 1969) and Apollo 11 (Homecoming).

This song highlights the goal set by President Kennedy in 1962 to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade. It emphasises the 'can do' attitude of those who worked long and hard to make it happen. Having been beaten by Russia to be the first to launch a human into space, the race was on to get to the moon!

In 62 Kennedy knew
Space was the final frontier
His voice echoed around the world
For everyone to hear

Man set out to take the moon
And jump up to the stars
To build the rockets, make the craft
Nowhere was too far

Chasing dreams, imagining worlds
Far beyond our own
To discover planets, other worlds
New hope, new peace, new home

New inventions, new discoveries
Astronauts at risk
Great minds working long and hard
A challenge they couldn’t resist
 
They took their marks
Ready to race
