Songs of Sailor and Sea celebrates man's eternal fascination with the sea and the centuries of seamen who have battled its powerful waves and mysterious depths. Commissioned by the United States Navy Band, this three-movement work depicts shipboard life with a 'Sea Chanty,' creatures of the sea with 'Whale Song,' and finally, the American Clipper Ships with 'Racing the Yankee Clipper.' Expanded percussion richly enhances this dramatically descriptive musical narrative. This is a major contribution to the concert band repertoire! (7:57).

Nothing bad can be said about this piece. Ever. And nothing is too good to describe it, either. It's one of those pieces you hear and wish you had composed it, but since you didn't, you want to hear it for the rest of your life, 24/7...

I'm a low brass player. I find myself often playing a very boring and less than challeging parts, but that isn't true of this piece. It's very lively and a blast to play!

I play 2nd alto sax in our high school band and we are playing this piece. It is amazing and inspiring. I have never played notes so fast in my entire life. Very advanced in some points, especially for a majority of the woodwinds. Favorite part: French Horn Soli after...

    Whale Song. Awesome piece.

I listened to this piece being played by the Stadacona Band and it's just such a great piece i would recommend any conductor or anyone who plays a musical instrument to play this piece because it is just that good.

  • October 19, 2001 Truly captivating...

I played this piece last year on the first clarinet part. It is somewhat challenging, but the whole thing is excellent. It truly brings out the power and the mythology of the sea.
