In searching for some new music I could play for viola and piano this year I found this sonata opus 106 by Scharwenka, composed in 1899, and I recently performed it in a concert. It was lots of fun to play and greatly appreciated by the audience. They asked us...

to perform it again somewhere else in the near future. The piece is filled with some beautiful lyrical melodies and lots of dramatic passages in between the melodic sections. It is exciting both to play and to listen to, and a wonderful sonata from the late romantic period that I hope becomes part of the standard viola repetoire.
