This is an excellent, not commonly heard and played piece, which, to me, combines the grace of Chopin with the passion of Russian romantic music. The first movement is a delicate fugue with a sad and wandering melody. The 2nd movement, a scherzo, which is basically a theme and variations...

, is great fun to play. The third movement is typically romantic, with beautiful harmonies, and the fourth movement has a wonderful driving melody. It is interesting that Balakirev has chosen to end the second and fourth movements quietly, something which is not commonly done. To me, the music sounds more difficult to play than it really is, although some parts are definitely challenging. The fingering provided by the editor is generally helpful; however, there are odd lapses, where no suggested fingering is provided. This is a defect that I don't really understand.

This is a rarely heard piece that is similar to the Rachmaninoff sonatas and is a powerful romantic work.
