  • July 25, 2018 Delicious trumpet sonata; mistakes in the score

George Antheil has gained more prominence in Seattle with Ludovic Morlot’s championing his works with the Seattle Symphony. His trumpet sonata isn’t well-known but it should be. It emphasizes the melodic side of the trumpet, with some more brassy staccato 16th note interludes. Each of the four...

movements stands well on its own. My criticisms of the publication are two-fold. First, there should be a solo part in C. That’s clearly the tone needed and the piece sits much more comfortably on C trumpet. Second, there are a few contradictory spots between the trumpet line over the piano part and the published solo part. I still haven’t worked out which is right. The trumpet line above the piano part is in C.
