Published by Jeremy Yowell (A0.778140).For some reason, I’ve given this carol an unlikely improvisational feel, with the hint of a Brazilian tango (OK, I guess it’s clearly more than just a hint). Not what you would naturally expect, but that’s what makes it so much fun!
Take your time with the introduction, keeping it nice and legato. Then, gently ease into the first verse. Even though the metronome marking is 120, we’re really not in a hurry! Just barely emphasize the syncopated melody (don’t overdo it), and keep a balanced contrast between the LH staccato and RH melody. Overall, you want a velvety smooth sound, like two dancers deftly moving together. You’ll also need to be careful not to "sit" on the pedal too much. Try to connect the notes with your fingers, like an organist would and use the pedal very sparingly. Have fun with this one, and savor that surprise major chord at the end!
