    Difficulty Level:
  • March 22, 2021 Nice edition but missing sonata 7

These sonatas are a delight to listen to and to play. They are pretty obscure which is a shame; Reger wrote some great stuff. These sonatas are Bach-like in nature; the harmonies and counterpoint resemble Bach much closer than Ysaye's six sonatas. One thing I do not like...

about this edition is that it is missing sonata 7. I find the version on IMSLP somewhat unsatisfactory -it looks like the sonata could be condensed into fewer pages- so I was hoping to find a better edition of sonata 7 in this volume. Sonata 7 is probably my favorite to listen to, especially because it has a Chaconne and seems to be the easiest of his chaconnes (he wrote two others, one in op. 42 and one in op. 91).However, this is definitely a good addition to anyone's violin library and repertoire: the paper quality is solid, it is free of misprints and errors to my knowledge, and the other six sonatas are still wonderful.
