Schura Cherkassky was an odd little man who at more than eighty years old, played wonderfully but preferred such curious things as the Toccata in D minor by Bach-Tausig and who, undeterred, continues to amuse with Gould's Boogie-Woogie - is a man of culture whose historical merits are to be acknowledged - including that of having made the public love the Berg Sonata, freeing it from among those works the common listener tended to avoid if he could. This 1963 recording tells us that he didn't come to Berg after all the work was already done, when the Sonata, Op. 1 was already in the repertory, but that he too, the same pianist who amused the public with the Melody by Rubinstein, the Tango by Albeniz-Godowsky and the Boogie-Woogie Etude by Morton Bould, played a part in seeing that it entered the repertory. Even if a bit late, it's good that we have finally acknowledged him as an artist to be proud of.
