  • December 07, 2012 Well worth getting

There's a fine performance of this on Leon Fleisher's "Two Hands" CD. Beautiful piece, though not for the Bach purist. This edition marks the main melodic line with barred (emphasized) notes. Bringing out that line in performance is not trivial, but the piece is not at the professionals...

-only level -- in fact, a good amateur should be able to sight-read it.

Egon Petri's transcription highlights the resonant harmonies of Bach's work to produce a delicate, intimate and unpretentious sound. This piece has been beautifully recorded by Leon Fleischer.

This more than 60 year-old transcription of this famous work by Bach remains firmly the No 1 for any aspiring concert pianist. I learned the first page from this site while waiting for my copy to cross the Atlantic! I've marked this towards 'advanced' because the 'voicing' of...

the theme is difficult to get right; this needs a LOT of work! If you have rather small hands, note that a slightly easier alternative rendering is offered in places. You can also shift some of the RH notes to the LH in places to make the trill and voicing easier. BTW, the suggested trill isn't right: start on the upper note and delay a bit. Overall, it's worth the effort; a guaranteed 'concert' success!!
