I teach piano in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Because of the ready availability of online sheet music, my students love to pick out their own materials. The Schaum Fingerpower series is excellent for early techical foundation because it is accessible and fun for the student!

Fingerpower is my second favorite book for teaching technique (A Dozen a Day is my first). This book is good for either the older beginning student who will find Dozen a Day mini book too "babyish" OR the younger student who after dozen a day mini still needs more re...

-inforcement of the same material. It begins with finger drills in groups of two, three, four and five fingers and later intervals, legato and staccato, accidentals, triads, parallell and contrary motion, patterns that move up and down the keyboard etc. It also moves beyond just one or two "positions" and includes cleff changes so in addition to technique is helps with reading.

I keep an extra set of Fingerpower books (first 4 levels) handy to use for sightreading and practicing duets. They are simple and short enough, emphasizing strong steady beats for beginning duet players.

  • 2007-02-27 00:00:00.0 A very nice suplemental book

I always pair this up with the regular lesson books as a technique book. The kids tell me that it helps them warm-up their fingers.
